I took the Tube to Goodge St. and made my way over to the "UK Slam Championships". I had heard about it at another spoken word performance I went to the week before. I've seen a lot of Spoken Work/Slam Poetry whether on TV, in Boston, or wherever. I love the wit, emotion, humor, creativity, and honesty of Spoken Word. More apparent than ever at this show though was that anyone can participate in Spoken Word. Below I had pictures (you weren't supposed to photograph so I only took the first one) of some of the best poets there...clearly not the typical slammers. The woman Below is named Fran Landesman. She actually wrote lyrics for Barbra Streisand and the only vocal song by Miles Davis. Anyway she was my favorite, so old, wearing a skull print shirt, and just doing her thing. It was really beautiful to see all the people and performers come together. I don't recall ever being part of such a diverse crown in age, gender, race, and background. Each one was extremely talented, intelligent, and hilarious.
